Jun 20, 2018

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Malaysia's central bank governor has become the latest senior official to resign amid a corruption probe of the former government that appointed them. Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said Wednesday the government accepted Muhammad Ibrahim's resignation and a replacement will be named once the Malaysian king gives his consent. The resignations come less than a month after a surprise May 9 election defeat for then-Prime Minister Najib Razak ended six decades in power for the former ruling coalition. The central bank is under scrutiny over a 2 billion ringgit ($500 million) land purchase from Najib's government. Proceeds...

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Anti-corruption investigators questioned the wife of former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak on Tuesday about alleged theft and money-laundering involving the 1MDB state investment fund, as officials announced a probe into other suspicious multibillion-dollar transactions under Najib's leadership. The prosecution of Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor over the 1MDB scandal, which helped lead to Najib's stunning ouster in May 9 national elections, could be sped up with the government's appointment Tuesday of a new attorney-general. The appointee, distinguished lawyer Tommy Thomas, is the first person from outside Malaysia's Malay majority to hold the powerful position...

Jun 20, 2018

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — The search by a private U.S. company for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 will end next week, Malaysia's transport minister said Wednesday, while families of those who died onboard urged the government to review all matters related to the jet's disappearance four years ago. Malaysia signed a "no cure, no fee" deal with Texas-based Ocean Infinity in January to resume the hunt for the plane, a year after the official search in the southern Indian Ocean by Australia, Malaysia and China was called off.
